I am honored and humbled by the outpouring of support from the people of Illinois.  Today, voters went to the polls seeking a way forward for our state and our nation in the midst of the greatest recession we have seen in generations.

Our victory tonight is a victory for those working families who have fought on the front lines of that recession.  They wanted to hear about how we would create jobs and stand up to special interests.  Because of you, we are now one step closer to bringing a strong voice for ordinary Americans to the U.S. Senate.

Just moments ago, Public Policy Polling released a new general election poll showing that I am the only candidate who can beat Republican Congressman Mark Kirk and who can keep President Barack Obama's former U.S. Senate seat in Democratic hands. The poll has me beating Mark Kirk, 42% to 34%.

No other Democrat polls higher than Mark Kirk.

Today, we honor Dr. Martin Luther King’s vision, legacy and commitment to fulfilling his dream of social and economic justice. We must not only remember his inspiring words, but also his sacrifice, wisdom and pursuit in achieving equality. We have made significant progress, but we still have far to go in order to renew our nation’s promise of a unified and more just society.

The last six months have shown that the people of Iran are eager for democratic reforms and respect for human rights. Just as the Iranian regime is murdering peaceful protestors, it is reneging on a promise made to the U.N. In its attempt to shift the focus from its own failings, the regime continues its campaign against Israel’s right to exist, and supports the work of terrorist organizations like Hamas and Hezbollah. My thoughts and prayers go out to the families of the victims at Ft. Hood, as well as to the families of those serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. Our nation must always remember and honor the sacrifices made by our men and women in uniform, especially on Veterans Day. These heroes risk their lives to protect our freedom, and we owe them daily thanks for that courage.

Below is a piece I wrote on DailyKos.com in June about our victory for Illinois workers:

Yesterday, I participated in a press conference in Des Plaines, Illinois to discuss the issue of jobs in Illinois. For the first time in a while, it wasn't to highlight the fact that Illinois is approximately 1% higher than the national average in unemployment, or that we are facing one of the worst fiscal crises in state government since the 1980s. Rather, it was to celebrate the fact that over one thousand workers in Illinois and over four thousand nationwide at Hartmarx Corp. are keeping their jobs making some of the finest suits in the country. Suits so special, our President wore one on the night he was elected.

Below is a piece I wrote on DailyKos.com in June about enacting bankruptcy reform to help families keep their homes:

As the State Treasurer of Illinois and a former vice-president of a community bank, I know a thing or two about banking and, make no mistake, the defeat of the bankruptcy provision known as “cram-down,” is yet another example of Washington putting corporate wishes ahead of citizen needs.
